In the early seventies, the company founded two friends, Rich Novak and Jay Shuirman, in one of their garages in Santa Cruz, California. The dream of these two surfers was the creation of skate products. For the realization of these dreams, the NHS Santa Cruz Skateboards founded in 1973 and develops and sells skateboard products to this day.

In 1975, designer Jim Phillips started working for NHS. Its main goal was to create skateboard designs that could compete with the developed surfers industry. Since then Jim has worked day and night on his mostly dark, wild, comic designs.
